"Advisor Update #11: 3 Weeks in HVAC, 3 Weeks Running Pool Sales, and Starting at eMed"

Michael Pichardo November 1, 2022 Updated May 26, 2026

I spent the summer doing deep industry research in HVAC, then ran sales and ops for a pool cleaning business to learn the market firsthand. Then took a new engineering role to reload.

Hope this email finds you well!

August through October:

I spent 3 weeks interviewing HVAC industry folks. I hustled to find people in my immediate network and went in-person to stores in Los Angeles and Miami to interview. Many problems exist in the space and this presentation summarizes my findings, so far.

Next, I spent 3 weeks working sales, spinning up a new brand+website+socials, and creating a customer success system for a family-friends pool cleaning business. The goal was to a) learn about the industry+ market, and b) get practical experience setting up systems that would drive sales today. This presentation showcases some things I did.

Shoutout to Blake and Darek, who both gave me similar advice. Try only one thing for a week straight and if no results, pivot. Don't waste time and iterate quickly. This applies across the board: whether it is trying a customer acquisition channel / method or simply finding ways to interview people.

After no tangible traction and a low personal cash runway, I started a new position as a Frontend Engineer at emed.com. Going to continue honing in on coding skills to become better and faster.

I still see a paradigm-shift with service businesses, but recognize I am not a domain expert in any service industry, which presents challenges if I were to dive into it again.

Overall, I've gotten smarter and learned how to deal with failure better and how to quickly learn about an industry. I've also gotten better about qualifying opportunities.

I have been very active in alumni networks and professional events in Miami. And, I am considering focusing on a niche industry that I have proximity / access to.

Any cool life / computer hacks you have learned about recently? I'm obsessed with speech to text feature in iMessage and love Wappylyzer Chrome extension for seeing what technologies power each website.
